DAKAR 2012 IN PERU -  Warning! Beware, destruction of archaeological rests hidden under Ica, Peru coastal desert sands may occur.

Dear all:

Greetings from Lima, Perú, the big news are in 2012 Dakar Rally ends in Peruvian territory.  Perhaps as Peruvian I would have to share the joy and happiness about this, but at the same time as Peruvian, adventure biker in my country and restless defender of our cultural heritage I must urgently call the attention of ALL AUTHORITIES IMPLIED to prevent and avoid any possible damage caused by the pass of the Dakar vehicles that may occur against the historic and cultural heritage laying on and under the sands of the Peruvian coastal desert,

The Ica region, the desert between Nazca and Pisco is a huge archaeological deposit waiting to be discovered.  Buried under the sand lay temples and constructions like the ones discovered by archaeologist Julio C. tello under the Paracas dunes.

But I’m also speaking about the Geoglyphs that exist on the sandy hills of the Ica desert around the Ocucaje area and near Pozo Santo close to Pisco in southern Peru.  As seen from the information and maps displayed on the media and Dakar 2012 website http://www.dakar.com/dakar/2012/es/recorrido.html the trace of the race pass just over the area hosting these invaluable archaeological deposits that at present days are not protected and with no signs except where the most famous sites exist like the Nazca Lines and Paracas as tourist attractions.  It is well known the vehicles on the Dakar Rally go cross country, the pilots drive their vehicles following the best way they find in front of them assisted with maps and GPS navigation devices.  The maps shown do not reveal the real route the vehicles will follow; we must be alert and make sure that no vehicle should pass over the Geoglyphs of Ica.

I know the location of Pozo Santo Geoglyphs as result of my exploration trips on bicycle and permanent research for new routes and destinations, but I keep the location secret to avoid any possible damage to the place caused by predators or not responsible people due the lack of signs and protective elements to define the area as restricted access. I would reveal not publicly the location to the ones with power to take decisions about this matter.  As far as I know the local Culture Ministry agency know about this matter however the Geoglyphs remain unprotected since many years ago.

This message has been sent by e-mail to several people and official organizations such as the Dakar 2012 Rally Organizers; Ica Regional Culture Directorate; Ica Regional Tourism Directorate; Culture Ministry: Heritage Defense Directorate, Archaeology Directorate; Peruvian Sports Institute which is on charge of the Peruvian counterpart for the Dakar organization; several local media, etc. however no response has been received yet and no information about any protective measure has been issued.

Please spread the word about this matter to make possible this information to reach all the people and organizations implied to attend the case, including the Dakar 2012 organization despite they are hermetic and closed to communication, to avoid any possible damage to our cultural heritage.  From my side I’m doing my best and hope you help to protect the unknown Geoglyphs of Ica. 

Volunteers needed

As no response has been received from the organizers we are calling to form brigades of volunteers to go to the Geoglyphs site to stand on safe and strategic spots with markers visible to the pilots to avoid their destruction by the pass of Dakar Rally vehicles.

EL DAKAR EN EL PERU 2012 – Mucha atención y cuidado con la destrucción del patrimonio arqueológico que yace en las arenas del desierto de Ica, Perú.

Estimados señores

Reciban mi más cordial saludo, les escribo a raíz de las noticias que aparecen en los diversos medios de prensa donde destaca la información sobre la extensión de la ruta del Rally Dakar en el año 2012 por el territorio peruano.  Comparto con todos el entusiasmo y la algarabía que la noticia conlleva, pero asimismo, como peruano, cicloviajero incansable y defensor de nuestro patrimonio cultural debo hacer un urgente llamado de atención a TODAS LAS AUTORIDADES QUE CORRESPONDAN para prevenir y evitar cualquier posible daño que pudiera ocurrir al patrimonio histórico cultural que yace en las pampas y desiertos de la costa peruana.

La zona de Ica, el desierto comprendido entre Nazca y Pisco es un gigantesco yacimiento arqueológico aún por descubrir.  Bajo las arenas del desierto yacen enterrados templos y construcciones como las que descubrió el eminente arqueólogo peruano Julio C.Tello en las dunas de Paracas.

De los que yo conozco, específicamente me refiero a los Geoglifos que existen en los arenales del desierto de Ica en la zona de Ocucaje y en las inmediaciones de Pozo Santo, cerca de Pisco en Ica.  Viendo las informaciones y los mapas que parecen en los medios de prensa y en el sitio web del Dakar 2012 http://www.dakar.com/dakar/2012/es/recorrido.html el trazo del recorrido pasa encima de estas zonas que albergan invalorables yacimientos arqueológicos que lamentablemente no están protegidos ni señalizados, excepto en algunos lugares famosos como las Pampas de Nasca y Palpa y en la zona conocida de Paracas como atracciones turísticas.  Se sabe que los vehículos que participan en el Rally Dakar hacen sus recorridos a campo traviesa, es decir los conductores buscan la ruta que mejor les conviene para llegar a la meta atravesando el territorio del desierto a su libre albedrío con la ayuda de mapas e instrumentos de navegación.  Si bien es cierto que los mapas mostrados no son exactamente los del trazo real del recorrido propuesto, debemos estar atentos y asegurar que ningún vehículo pase encima de los Geoglifos de Ica.

La ubicación de los Geoglifos de Pozo Santo la conozco como fruto de mis recorridos exploratorios en bicicleta y de constantes investigaciones y búsquedas de nuevas rutas y destinos pero mantengo el secreto de su ubicación para evitar la depredación y daños al yacimiento que pudieran ocasionar visitantes irresponsables, ya que el lugar no se encuentra protegido ni señalizado y por lo tanto expuesto al peligro de ser destruido.  Sin embargo los datos de ubicación los revelaré a las autoridades y quienes tengan el poder y facultad de asegurar su protección.  Hasta donde he podido averiguar la filial del INC en Ica tiene conocimiento de la existencia y ubicación de estos Geoglifos, sin embargo se encuentran desprotegidos desde que fueron descubiertos hace muchos años.

Este mensaje lo he enviado por correo electrónico a diversas personas y entidades tales como los Organizadores del Rally Dakar 2012; Dirección Regional de Cultura de Ica; Dirección Regional de Turismo de Ica; Ministerio de Cultura: Dirección de Defensa del Patrimonio, Dirección de Arqueología; Instituto Peruano del Deporte; diversos medios de Prensa, etc, sin embargo hasta la fecha no he recibido respuesta alguna ni tengo información confirmatoria de que se haya tomado medida preventiva alguna.

Difunda este mensaje para que llegue a todas las personas y/o instituciones que les corresponda intervenir para evitar un posible daño irreparable a nuestro patrimonio histórico cultural.  Yo por mi parte haré lo propio y espero que juntos podamos ayudar a preservar los Geoglifos del desierto de Ica.

Necesitamos voluntarios

Ante la falta de respuesta y el hermetismo de los organizadores, se están organizando brigadas de voluntarios que el día del paso de los vehículos del Dakar nos apostaremos en lugares seguros y estratégicos en la zona de los Geoglifos con banderas visibles para los pilotos para evitar la destrucción de los Geoglifos.
