La vuelta CTP al lago Titikaka.

Después de un par de días de haber vuelto y de la necesaria readaptación al medio y a la vida habitual, el recuerdo de todo lo cleteado alrededor del Lago Titikaka sigue visible delante de los ojos.

Aventura fuerte, intensa, impresionante e indescriptiblemente hermosa a través de los parajes del altiplano andino.  Los 3,800msnm hacen lo suyo a los costeños sin aclimatación, por lo menos el primer día.  Luego el pedaleo sigue con ritmo in crescendo a medida que se va abriendo el camino y descubriéndose más y nuevas vistas del lago y los paisajes circundantes.  El altiplano es impresionante, inmensas inmensidades de llanuras que se pierden en el horizonte y se fusionan con el azul del lago.  Solo donde el cielo se une a la tierra se ve el relieve de lejanas montañas.

En primer debemos expresar nuestro profundo agradecimiento a las personas e instituciones que colaboraron directa e indirectamente con la realización de la Vuelta CTP al Lago Titikaka y que creen en la viabilidad de nuestro proyecto y con quienes seguiremos desarrollándolo para convertir esta ruta en un atractivo turístico relevante en la zona de influencia del Lago Titikaka.  Gracias a Felipe Laura -OGD Puno, Martha Giraldo -Swisscontact, Carlos Cordero –Casa Andina Isla Suasi, Eduardo Pineda –OGD Puno, Pilar Ballón –TurPeru Puno. 

Día 1. La carretera asfaltada que va de Puno hasta Yunguyo, por el Urcusuyu o margen occidental del lago, es hostil, con harto tráfico de vehículos y peligrosa como todas las carreteras.  Por eso en Platería nos desviamos hacia el este para acercarnos a la orilla del lago, hacia Pallalla; Titilaka ,con su hotel, una alucinación surrealista; playa Charcas y Socca para cletear por una zona por donde según el mapa está cubierto de agua, pero que ahora está seco  y nos permitió acercarnos hasta una zona donde habitan flamencos a orillas del lago. La ruta siguió durante la tarde por la carretera afirmada que atraviesa una hermosa y tranquila área rural, salpicada de pueblitos pintorescos.  En uno de ellos donde a la muerte casi nunca se le ve un chibolo de 17 años en su bici perdió la vida el día anterior bajo las llantas de un pesado volquete.  Impresionante e imposible de imaginar que eso haya podido ocurrir en ese lugar. 

Ilave, pueblo tristemente célebre por razones que es preferible no comentar, pasamos de largo nomás, ya de noche, la etapa nocturna bajo luz de luna y con luces hacia Juli fue tranquila, fresca e interesante. 

Juli, pueblito tranquilo, entre cuatro cerros, calles empinadas, cuatro iglesias y algunos detalles interesantes. Aquí el odómetro marcaba 110k.  Hora de descansar. Fueron casi 12 horas de pedaleo. Perfecto para aclimatarse al toke. 

Día 2. Juli nos despide con una salida que es una subida brutal hasta llegar a la carrereta. Sigue la ruta, pasa por Pomata y Yunguyo.  Aquí del paso fronterizo de Katani a Copacabana en Bolivia son 8k.  Copacabana, gringódromo bonito, limpio y ordenado, interesante, comercial y activo.  Su puerto con numerosas embarcaciones de todo tamaño tiene un aspecto pintoresco.  Noche aquí. 

Día 3. La salida de Copacabana es una subida bestial de 12k hasta los 4270msnm siguiendo por la carretera que discurre por las alturas de la península permitiendo vistas espectaculares del lago por ambos lados: el peruano y el boliviano, hasta el estrecho de Tiquina donde el cruce a bordo de los lanchones que trasladan vehículos de una orilla a la otra es una experiencia interesante.  Salir de Tiquina también es cuesta arriba hasta que bajamos nuevamente a los llanos bolivianos al nivel de las orillas del lago en Huatajata, una especie de costa verde altoandina donde la gente va a veranear a orillas del lago, hay hartos hoteles y restaurantes de diversos tamaños y categorías.  Noche aquí.

Día 4. Partida tempranera por la larga jornada que nos espera.  A Raphael hasta La Paz, a mí hasta Ancoraimes.  En Huarina el camino se bifurca al igual que nuestros destinos.  Una par de fotos de despedida y un adiós al cicloviajero suizo que continúa con su tour por Sudamérica en bici que empezó en Lima.  La ruta hacia Ancoraimes es una carretera asfaltada tranquila, poco tráfico y a través de un paisaje rural tranquilo y relajante.  Pronto aparece Achacachi, último bastión civilizatorio de la zona donde se puede hallar una cabina de Internet.  Después de Achacachi sigue una larga y extensa llanura que parece inacabable y con fuerte viento en contra que se opone al avance haciendo lento y pesado el pedaleo, hasta que a lo lejos se divisa Ancoraimes que ese día cerraba la fiesta de los difuntos con danzas y bandas de música de la terqueada boliviana. No hay otra, noche aquí.en el único alojamiento rústico que hay. 

Día 5. La salida de Ancoraimes, al igual que de los otros pueblos es una subida brutal, no muy larga pero bien empinada.  Luego sigue el llano por encima del lago con vistas espectaculares.  Ya estamos en el Omasuyu boliviano.  Preciosos paisajes y vistas imposibles de olvidar.  Pasan Chaguata, Carabuco y Escoma –un poco más distante.  Se acaba el asfalto, el paisaje se vuelve más bonito, más silvestre, más rural, el Omasuyu al 100%. A L U C I N A N T E.  Puerto Acosta, pueblo activo por el comercio y el intercambio de mercancías que van y vienen de contrabando entre Perú y Bolivia.  Pueblo poco amigable y de gente que te mira y te habla medio feo.  Lo mejor es pasar desapercibido, desaparecer de las calles, meterte a un hotel y partir al Perú al día siguiente muy temprano.  Noche aquí. 

Día 6. La salida al Perú es un lindo camino ancestral y silvestre, de fuerte pendiente que te hace empujar la cleta hasta la cima para seguir más tranquilo por la pampa de la puna a 4,100msnm hasta la frontera del Hito N° 3.  Las vistas del paisaje en esta zona son espectaculares. Volver al territorio del Perú da una sensación de paz, seguridad y tranquilidad.  El Omasuyu peruano es bellísimo, tras cada curva y recodo del camino una vista más hermosa que la anterior aparece.  Los pueblos pasan en secuencia: Tilali, Conima y Cambría.  Aquí está el embarcadero para visitar la Isla Suasi. 

La Isla Suasi y el Hotel Casa Andina es una historia aparte, una experiencia única y personal, se trata de sensaciones de paz, tranquilidad, relax y desconexión total del resto del mundo.  La ambientación rústica, funcional y agradable es perfecta, los jardines, los bosques que lo rodean, el lago, todo es mágico, casi onírico.  La experiencia del sunset desde lo alto de la isla es indescriptible y alucinante.  El movimiento y cambio de colores del cielo y el reflejo sobre la superficie del lago es algo que nunca antes había visto.  Además que, llegar a este lugar después de pasar los tres últimos días sin ducharte y casi sin comer, es como llegar al paraíso y se experimenta el fuerte contraste entre lo mínimo y lo máximo, entre la nada y todo lo bueno que uno quisiera disfrutar.  Noche aquí.  Paz total. 

Día 7. Retorno a la orilla de Cambría en el bote zodiac de Casa Andina para seguir la ruta en bicicleta por el hermoso Omasuyu peruano hasta Moho.  Aquí acabó el pedaleo.  Lectura del odómetro: 447k. Lo que sigue se hizo en bus a través de la zona de Huancané hasta Juliaca y Puno por razones de disponibilidad de tiempo y compromisos adquiridos que habían que cumplir. 

En resumen, la Vuelta CTP al Lago Titikaka fue  A L U C I N A N T E.  Uno de los mejores viajes de cicloturismo que hemos hecho hasta ahora.

CTP Lake Titikaka bike tour

After a couple of days recovering and readapting myself to the usual environment and life, the memories of the splendid cycling experience around LT are still there in front of my eyes. 

Strong adventure, intense, impressive and indescribably beautiful across the high andes plateau.  Those 3800 masl make things difficult to the coast people not adapted to the altitude, at least on the first day.  Afterwards pedaling improves in crescendo as the road progresses and more and new sights of the lake and surrounding scenery opens to our eyes.  The high andes plateau is impressive, large inmense plains become lost in the horizon and melt with the blue lake.  Only where the sky meets the earth the profile of the distant mountains is seen. 

Day 1.  The paved road from Puno to Yunguyo, along the Urcusuyu, the western side of the lake, is hostile, with lots of heavy vehicles traffic, and dangerous as all the highways.  That is why from Plateria we headed eastward closer to the lake’s shores by Pallalla; Titilaka with its hotel, a surrealistic hallucination; Charcas beach and Socca to ride across an area that according with the maps is covered by water, however now is dry and allowed us to get close to flamingos habitats on the shore of the lake.  The afternoon ride continued along an unpaved road by a nice rural area dotted with pretty villages.  In one of them where death is almost unknown a 17 years old kid riding his bike was killed by a heavy truck the day before. Something so absurd and difficult to imagine for such a peaceful place. 

Ilave a town sadly famous for not nice events happened months ago, better not to comment about, we just passed through, it was already dark.  We had a nice night ride under moon light and aided with headlights down to Juli, that was nice, nice fresh and interesting. 

Juli, a nice village located among four hills, very steep streets, four colonial churches and some other interesting details.  Here de odometer read was 110k. Time to sleep. Those were about 12 hours on the saddle.  Ideal for a quick acclimatization. 

Day 2.  Juli farewell us with a brutal steep climb to get up to the highway.  The route follows to Pomata and Yunguyo.  Here the from the border pass at Katani to Copacabana in Bolivia are 8k.  Copacabana, crowds of gringos everywhere, a nice, clean, active and interesting town. Its port with many boats has a picturesque look.  Overnight here. 

Day 3. The way out from Copacabana is another brutal climb 12k long up to 4270 masl along the road  running by the top of the peninsula allowing spectacular views of the lake to both sides: the Peruvian and the bolivian, down to the Tiquina strait where the pass on board the boats transferring vehicles from one side to the other of the strait is an interesting experience. The way out from Tiquina is a climb too until we reached the plain shores at lake level by Huatajata, a sort of extense beach where the bolivians use to go for summer holidays, there are many hotels and restaurants randomly distributed and of diverse size and quality standards.  Overnight here. 

Day 4.  Early departure because we had  long journeys in front of us. For Raphael all the way down to La Paz, for me to Ancoraimes.  At Huarina the road forks as our destinations: southward to La Paz, northward to the Omasuyu, the eastern side of the lake.  A couple of last pictures and goodbye to the swiss bike tourer following his way across south America on a bike that started in Lima.  The paved road to Ancoraimes is quite nice, not much traffic and the scenery is pretty rural and relaxing.  Soon appears Achacachi, the last town with modern technology available as internet cafes.  Further from Achacachi follows an extensive plain almost endless with strong wind against my face making pedaling slow and difficult.  Finally Ancoraimes is reached and found celebrating the deads day with dancing groups and bands playing the bolivian terqueada music.  There were no other option but to stay overnight in the unique very basic local lodge available in the town. 

Day 5.  Again, the way out of Ancoraimes is a strong steep climb, not too long but hard. Follows the plain above the LT with superb views of it.  We are already in the bolivian Omasuyu region.  Beautiful landscapes and views impossible to forget.  Chaguata, Carabuco and Escoma –a bit distant. villages pass by.  The pavement ends, the scenery becomes more beautiful, more rural, wilderness arises.  The Omasuyu at its best in one word just H A L L U C I N A T I N G. Puerto Acosta appears on the way, this is an active town with live exchange of merchandise coming and going as smuggling between Peru and Bolivia.  The town didn’t seem so friendly to me, the people talked and looked at me in a hostile manner so the best was to disappear from the streets, stayed in one of the very rudimentary lodges and leave to Peru, my home country, the next day early morning. 

Day 6-  One more time the way out of  the town is a steep climb forcing to push up the bike to the top of the dirt road leading to the boundary post N° 3 the border with Peru across the high plain at 4100 msasl.  The scenic beauty in this area is superb.  To return to my home country provided me the feeling of peace, safety and relax.  The Peruvian Omasuyu is really beautiful, right after each turn of the road a prettier view than the previous shows up.  The villages pass one after next: Tilali, Conima and Cambria.  Here is the embarcadero to visit Suasi Island. 

Suasi Island and Casa Andina Hotel is another story. A unique and personal experience.  It is a matter of sensations of peace, tranquility, environmental beauty, relax and disconnection from the rest of the world.  The setting is functional, rustic, nice and perfect, the gardens, the surrounding woods, the lake, everything is magic almost a dream. The sunset experience from the top of the island is indescribably beautiful.  The movements and changes of colors and the reflections on the surface of LT is something I have never seen before.  Moreover, arriving this place after the last three days without having a shower and not eating well is like arriving the paradise and the experience of that extreme contrast between the very minimum and the maximum, the almost nothing and all the good comfort one could expect to have and enjoy.  Overnight here. Total peace. 

Day 7. Return to the Cambria shores by the zodiac boat of Casa Andina to continue the last 15k of the trip on the Omasuyu to Moho.  Here the odometer reading was 447k.  The rest of the trip to Huancané, Juliaca and Puno was made on a bus due to time limitations and commitments to accomplish with local organizations. 

In summary the CTP bike tour around Lake Titikaka was H A L L U C I N A T I N G.  One of the best we have ever made until now.
